Common Fire Door Questions Answered by a Top UK Supplier

Date Posted: 07th May 2025

At Pendle Doors, we understand that fire doors can seem complicated. As a leading bespoke fire door manufacturer and supplier, we get asked the same questions time and time again. So, we’ve put together this quick, no-nonsense guide to help you get the facts.

What is a fire door, & why is it important?

A fire door is specially built to stop fire and smoke spreading. It gives people more time to escape safely. Fire doors also help protect property and reduce damage. At Pendle Doors, we supply bespoke fire doors that meet the highest UK safety standards, ranging from  FD30 to FD120 ratings.

What do FD30 & FD60 mean?

These are fire resistance ratings. FD30 and FD60 doors have been stringently tested to withstand the threat of fire spreading for this period of time. In most cases, the doors, when tested, have exceeded these times. These are the most common types for flats, housing, and commercial buildings. We also offer FD90 and FD120 doorsets for higher-risk areas.

Where do I need a fire door in the UK?

If you live in a flat or an HMO (house of multiple occupancy), you must have a fire door at your main entrance. If your home has three or more floors, or if you’ve had a loft conversion, fire doors are usually needed. Fire doors are also required between houses and attached garages.

What is a doorset, and why choose one?

A doorset is a fully pre-assembled door, frame, and hardware ready to install. It ensures the fire door works exactly as tested. Our doorsets include severe-duty rated cores, multi-point locks, door closers, and other compliant components. Every part works together for top performance.

Can fire doors be stylish?

Absolutely. Just because a door is fire-rated doesn’t mean it has to look industrial. We offer bespoke fire doors in a huge range of finishes. From smooth laminates to real wood veneers, everything is factory finished to a high standard. We can match finishes, add glazed panels, and supply custom shapes.

Are Pendle Doors fire doors certified?

Yes. All our doorsets meet UK fire and security standards. Our doors are tested to BS EN 1634-1 and BS EN 1634-3. We’re certified under the BM Trada Q-Mark schemes for both fire door manufacturing and enhanced security. Our products also meet PAS 24:2016 standards.

Can I install a fire door myself?

We always recommend using a certified installer. Even the best fire door won’t perform if fitted poorly. Our team can advise on installation or recommend trusted professionals.

Do fire doors need maintenance?

Yes. In line with Fire Safety (England) Regulations 2022, regular checks are now the law in many buildings. That means making sure seals, hinges, gaps, and closers are all working correctly.
